Chinese Premier Li Qiang issued a direct appeal against the growth of global protectionism during the ‘Dialogue 1+10’ with leaders of major economic institutions in Beijing on Tuesday. This comes a day after China recorded a historic trade surplus of $1 trillion. At the meeting, Li pointed out that the proliferation of tariffs has heightened global tensions and compromised international economic activity. He argued for the need to strengthen global governance to address the escalating trade barriers. Pressure for reforms and tensions extend beyond the US. The expansion of China’s surplus has reignited criticisms from partners calling for structural reforms to reduce the country’s reliance on exports and increase domestic consumption. In addition to the US, governed by President Donald Trump, China faces growing trade friction with Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asian economies. ‘Since the beginning of the year, the threat of tariffs has loomed over the global economy, with various trade restrictions proliferating and severely impacting global economic activity,’ Li stated during the meeting. He emphasized that ‘the mutually destructive consequences of tariffs are becoming increasingly apparent.’
