In July 2024, a group of Chinese technologists and researchers gathered in Urumqi, Xinjiang’s capital, to discuss strategies for preventing internet users from circumventing the Great Firewall. This massive online censorship and surveillance system is a key tool for the Chinese government to control information flow within the country. Among those present at the meeting was Geedge Networks, a company that was revealed to be exporting censorship technology to foreign governments. The leaked files exposed the company’s involvement in providing censorship capabilities to countries like Myanmar, Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Kazakhstan, raising concerns about the spread of Chinese-style online repression globally. Efforts to suppress internet freedom and control online content seem to be expanding beyond China’s borders, facilitated by companies like Geedge Networks.
