Several municipalities in different regions of Santa Catarina canceled classes in the municipal education network this Tuesday (9) after alerts issued by the State Civil Defense about the extratropical cyclone forming on Monday (8). By the latest update, 52 cities had already suspended classes as a precautionary measure. In the early afternoon, the State Government of Santa Catarina decided to suspend classes for the state education network in the afternoon and evening on Monday in areas under orange alert, corresponding to the West, most of the North Plateau, and areas of the South Plateau and Upper Itajaí Valley.
On Tuesday, the suspension applies to areas in orange and red, which encompasses the entire State of Santa Catarina. Classes will be suspended in the morning and afternoon. Cities that suspended classes in SC include Florianópolis, Palhoça, Tijucas, Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, Biguaçu, São José, Canoinhas, Campo Alegre, Itapoá, São Bento do Sul, Itaiópolis, Papanduva, Rio Negrinho, São Francisco do Sul, and Massaranduba.
Others include Chapecó, Itapema, Timbó, Rio do Sul, Porto Belo, Penha, Indaial, Gaspar, Rodeio, Itajaí, Lages, Joaçaba, Urubici, Balneário Camboriú, Presidente Getúlio, Xanxerê, Dionísio Cequeira, Seara, Concórdia, São Miguel do Oeste, Guaraciaba, Maravilha, Itapiranga, União do Oeste, Passos Maia, Coronel Martins, Serra Alta, Palmitos, São Domingos, Piratuba, Abelardo Luz, Quilombo, Ipuaçu, Joinville, Porto União, Três Barras, and Araquari. Some cities that decided to maintain classes include Jaraguá do Sul, Brusque, Pomerode, Blumenau, Xaxim, Sul Brasil, Guaramirim, Schroeder, Barra Velha, Balneário Piçarras, and São João do Itaperiú.
