Negotiations between Brussels and Jakarta have accelerated in recent months following the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump. The US President has forced Indonesia to accept a general surcharge of 19%, while the European Union has also faced challenges due to the US-China trade tensions. In response, the EU has sought new markets, including Indonesia, to diversify its trade relationships and secure essential resources. President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the trade deal with Indonesia as a means to break free from the pressures exerted by Trump’s protectionist policies and the US-China rivalry.
