Colombia States US Warship Deployment to Venezuela Is a Mistake

Colombia States US Warship Deployment to Venezuela Is a Mistake President Gustavo Petro of Colombia stated on Tuesday (19) that the decision by the US government to send three warships near the coast of Venezuela is a ‘mistake’ as it will not solve the drug trafficking problems at the American border. Three guided-missile destroyers ‘U.S. Aegis’ will arrive off the coast of Venezuela as part of an effort to tackle threats from drug cartels in Latin America, two sources on the matter reported on Monday (18). President Donald Trump wanted to use the military to target Latin American drug gangs that have been designated as global terrorist organizations. The Venezuelan Ministry of Communications did not immediately respond to a request for comments. Without mentioning the warships, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro stated on Monday (18) in a speech that Venezuela ‘will defend our seas, our skies, and our lands.’ He alluded to what he called ‘the strange and bizarre threat from a declining empire.’ Trump has made cracking down on drug cartels a central goal of his administration as part of a broader effort to limit migration and protect the US southern border.
