Congress plots “impunity package” in response to the Supreme Court

The proposed Constitutional Amendment (PEC) being articulated behind the scenes of Congress to abolish privileged forum – nicknamed by lawmakers and political analysts as the “impunity package” – includes provisions that could drastically restrict the investigation of deputies and senators, as reported by O Globo newspaper. According to the preliminary text, investigations against parliamentarians can only be opened with the authorization of the National Congress itself. Currently, inquiries can be initiated at the request of the Federal Public Ministry and with the approval of the Supreme Court (STF), or by decision of the Court’s ministers, which is currently the instance responsible for processing and judging these cases.
