Indonesian officials have put a stop to the construction of a 597-foot glass elevator project at the famous Kelingking Beach in Bali. The project, which was being developed by the China Kaishi Group, has been halted due to concerns regarding building violations. Construction of the massive elevator in Nusa Penida has been ongoing for the past year, but authorities have raised issues regarding permits and licensing from the office on spatial affairs, assess, and permits. Despite the construction halt, Kelingking Beach remains open to the public.
The spatial affairs chief, Made Supartha, stated that the Bali Municipal police would ensure that no further construction activities take place at the site. Supartha highlighted that the project had failed to obtain all the necessary permits and paperwork, including those related to safety and disaster mitigation. A government official from the province has called for an investigation into the project to address the concerns raised.
However, Indonesia’s deputy tourism minister defended the project’s planning and supervision, mentioning that measures for sustainability, safety, and cleanliness had been in place since the inception of the project in 2023. The official stated that this reflects the country’s commitment to ensuring responsible development. Despite the temporary setback, the future of the glass elevator construction at Kelingking Beach remains uncertain pending further assessments and investigations.
