Datafolha: 35% blame Lula for tariff hike, 22% blame Jair Bolsonaro, and 17% blame Eduardo

A survey conducted by the Datafolha Institute and released on Saturday afternoon (16) shows that 35% of respondents blame Lula for the tariff hike imposed by US President Donald Trump on Brazil. For 22%, Jair Bolsonaro is seen as the culprit, while 17% attribute the blame to the former president’s son, federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro from PL. Following closely is Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes at 15%. Only 2% believe nobody is to blame. The survey interviewed 2,002 people in 113 municipalities between August 11 and 12. The margin of error is 2 percentage points, with a 95% confidence level.

When asked which Brazilian figure is mainly responsible for the up to 50% tax imposed by the US government, opinions varied: Lula 35%, Jair Bolsonaro 22%, Eduardo Bolsonaro 17%, Alexandre de Moraes 15%, None 3%, All 1%, Don’t know 7%. The US imposed a 50% tariff on some Brazilian imports, citing an unbalanced trade relationship and a witch hunt against former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who is currently a defendant in a criminal case for allegedly being involved in an attempted coup. Alexandre de Moraes, responsible for the legal actions, faced US sanctions under the Magnitsky Act.
