Indonesian authorities have reported that floods and landslides caused by intense monsoonal rains that have hit the island of Sumatra have already claimed 174 lives and left at least 79 missing. Rescue teams continue search operations, hampered by damaged infrastructure and lack of suitable machinery.
According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), 116 people have lost their lives in northern Sumatra, while another 23 bodies were found in the western part of the island. Rescue teams have also recorded 35 fatalities in the province of Aceh, in the northern tip of the insular territory.
In Aceh and West Sumatra, thousands of houses have been flooded, many of them almost completely, as reported by ‘The Jakarta Post’. The torrential rains have also caused rivers to overflow in the north of the island, with more than 3,200 homes and buildings flooded, and about 3,000 families having to seek shelter in the past week.
The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics has indicated that a tropical cyclone will continue to affect the country, generating adverse weather conditions that could persist for several days, further complicating rescue efforts.
