Death Toll from Indonesia Landslides Climbs to 18

The death toll from three landslides on Indonesia’s Java island has reached 18, with more than 30 people missing due to heavy rainfall, as reported by a disaster official on Monday. Last week, in the Cilacap district of Central Java province, heavy rainfall triggered a landslide affecting multiple locations. Following this, two additional landslides struck a village in the Banjarnegara district of Central Java over the weekend, detailed Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the national disaster mitigation agency.
The death toll initially reported at 11 on Saturday, eventually rose to 16 as three more bodies were discovered in Cilacap by Monday. Abdul mentioned seven people were still missing in the area, with 16 houses suffering damage. Efforts to locate the missing victims remained a priority, as confirmed by Suharyanto, the agency chief, stressing ongoing collaboration with the victims’ families.
Authorities are arranging a temporary housing area for the affected individuals, potentially relocating nearly 300 families. In Banjarnegara, two people were reported dead and at least 27 were missing, according to Abdul. The national weather service issued a warning of anticipated heavy rainfall across various regions in the upcoming weeks.
Indonesia faces challenges during the annual monsoon season, typically between November and April, witnessing an increase in landslides, flash floods, and waterborne diseases. The impact of climate change is altering storm patterns, prolonging the season and intensifying rainfall, flash floods, and wind gusts. The country recently experienced flash floods and landslides in a remote Papua region, claiming the lives of at least 15 individuals.
