Delivery driver assaulted by customer, leading to retaliation by colleagues in Meireles

A delivery app driver was assaulted during his shift in Meireles neighborhood on Sunday night. The victim, identified as Alex Costa Rodrigues, was reportedly attacked by the customer who couldn’t make payment using card or Pix, according to Vivaldo Silva, a friend of the driver. ‘He got mad at Alex, assaulted him, took the goods, and went upstairs. After the police arrived, it seems the young man’s father came down and wanted to pay cash for the order,’ explained Vivaldo.

Initially, the driver was taken to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Cristo Redentor neighborhood and due to the severity of the injuries, he was to be transferred to Dr. José Frota Institute (IJF). ‘He was very badly hurt and had suspected signs of a Stroke (AVC) starting. He was quite injured,’ informed Alex’s friend.

As a result of the assault on the driver, a group of motorcyclists who also provide delivery services via app retaliated by breaking down the gate of the aggressor customer’s building. The journalists reached out to different food delivery apps where the assaulted driver works and are awaiting further updates on the matter.

What is the Police saying? The Department of Public Safety and Social Defense (SSPDS) reports that the Civil Police are investigating the circumstances of the assault that occurred on Sunday night in Meireles neighborhood. According to initial reports, the victim was injured and taken to a healthcare facility. The Military Police were called to the scene. A Police Report (BO) was filed, and the 2nd Police District is leading the investigations.
