The main reasons behind the dementia crisis include the prevalence of age-related illnesses, social isolation, and the breakdown of family structures in Indian society. As families become smaller, elderly members often get lost in the shuffle or are forgotten by their loved ones.
One of the biggest concerns is the lack of infrastructure for dementia care in the country. There is a shortage of specialized dementia care centers across India, with over 50% of those facilities located in major cities and run by private hospitals or non-profit organizations.
Rural areas struggle with dementia care, as many elderly individuals living in villages and semi-urban areas are left to fend for themselves. National policies also lack significant provisions for dementia care or public health programs.
In Indian culture, caring for elderly parents at home is a common practice, but family members, especially women, often feel overwhelmed emotionally and struggle with the guilt of not being able to provide proper care. Caregivers often feel helpless due to the lack of awareness and training in health and nursing assistance for dementia patients.
Research scientist Manveen Kaur warns that when a woman, typically the primary caregiver, develops dementia, the entire family structure starts to crumble.
The situation in India calls for urgent attention and action to address the growing dementia crisis and provide better support and resources for affected individuals and their families.
