BATANG TORU, Indonesia (AP) — The recent torrential rains caused catastrophic floods and landslides in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia, resulting in the death of more than 1,400 people. Indonesia reported the highest number of casualties, with at least 753 deaths, followed by Sri Lanka with 465 fatalities. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized that it is premature to ascertain the exact death toll in their country. Additionally, Thailand reported 185 deaths, while Malaysia confirmed three casualties. Rescue operations are underway to reach isolated communities, with over 1,000 people still missing amidst power and telecommunication outages.
