Dino Opens Inquiry Against Bolsonaro Based on CPI of Covid Opinion

The Supreme Court Justice, Flavio Dino, requested the opening of an inquiry on Wednesday (17) against former President Jair Bolsonaro and 23 allies based on the report of the Covid-19 Parliamentary Inquiry Commission.
According to the minister, the document prepared at the end of the commission presented evidence of crimes and contained the legal requirements necessary for the initiation of a Police Inquiry. ‘I highlight that the parliamentary investigation pointed to evidence of crimes against Public Administration, especially in contracts, bidding fraud, overpricing, misappropriation of public funds, signing contracts with ‘front’ companies for generic or fictitious services, among other offenses mentioned in the CPI report,’ says Dino.
In 2021, the CPI indicted those mentioned in the action. Two years later, at the end of 2024, the Federal Police requested to convert the parliamentary investigation into a Police Inquiry. This is the request accepted by Dino on Wednesday (17). Now the Federal Police will supplement the CPI investigations.
The request comes two days after the Chamber of Deputies approved the PEC of Shielding, which makes it difficult to arrest and criminally prosecute congressmen. The proposal restricts the arrest of lawmakers caught in the act and requires the Legislature’s approval to open criminal proceedings. The text also establishes a 90-day deadline for pre-authorization for arrest or processes.
Among the 24 people who will be investigated, 7 of them are current parliamentarians. They are:
