Diogo Moreira Makes History for Brazil as Moto2 Champion

Diogo Moreira made history for Brazilian motorsport on Sunday. In a conservative race without taking risks, the Italtrans rider started from the 9th position to finish the Valencia GP in the same spot, more than enough to claim the Moto2 2025 title! He becomes the first Brazilian to win a world championship in two-wheeled racing!

Heading into the Moto2 grand finale with a 24-point advantage over Manu González and 25 points up for grabs in Valencia, Moreira only needed to finish in the top 14 to secure the championship. On the other hand, González required a win with Moreira finishing no higher than 15th. The weekend proved to be dramatic for Moreira, with a 19th place in TL2 and a Q1 challenge in qualifying.

At the start, Guevara took the lead, with Holgado in second, Arenas in third, Agius in fourth, and González and Moreira holding onto fifth and ninth positions, respectively. An early yellow flag due to Dani Muñoz and Barry Baltus’ crashes added tension to the race on the first lap.

By the fifth lap out of 22, the top 4 remained unchanged, while Ortolá managed to pass González for fifth, with Moreira holding onto ninth conservatively, closely followed by Vietti. Halfway through the race, Guevara led but was pressured by Holgado. González was back in fifth, just 0.6 seconds behind Ortolá in fourth. Moreira maintained ninth, a safe distance from the top 8 pack, with Vietti trailing by 0.2 seconds.

As Vietti and Dixon traded places, Moreira found some breathing room. By the 14th lap, the Brazilian had a cushion of over 1 second, allowing him to run a controlled race. Further back, González began to struggle, losing positions to Arenas and Salac, dropping to eighth just ahead of Diogo. Moreira quickly caught up to the Spaniard, moving up to eighth, while González fell down the rankings. The Spaniard even went to the pits but returned to the track.

In the end, Diogo Moreira finished 11th, easing off in the last laps to secure a historic championship for Brazil in motorsport. He becomes the first Brazilian to win a world championship in motorcycle racing. The race saw Izan Guevara taking the win, followed by Dani Holgado in second and Ivan Ortolá in third.
