Women often rely too much on self-examination, experts say. While it’s important to check your breasts for lumps once a month, this method is not foolproof. Typically, women can only detect large lumps on their own, while tiny growths that occur in the early stages of cancer are likely to go unnoticed.
“In 25 years of working in oncology, I’ve seen too many women miss early signs of breast cancer because they only knew one thing: they need to pay attention to lumps,” explains oncologist Tiffany Troso.
According to the doctor, breast cancer does not always manifest with lumps.
“I often hear my patients say, ‘I performed self-examination every month, so I thought I was safe.’ In those moments, I think: it’s a shame no one told her about other signs of cancer,” says the oncologist.
Dr. Troso decided to fill the knowledge gap. The expert listed other signs of breast cancer that may not be as obvious as lumps. Nevertheless, if you experience these symptoms, be sure to see a specialist.
Changes in breast shape or size.
Dimpling or puckering of the skin on the breast.
Nipple retraction.
Unexplained nipple discharge, especially blood-stained.
Reddening of the skin on the breast, increased firmness, or flakiness.
Persistent itching in the breast area, constant rash on the skin.
Swelling in the armpit or collarbone area.
Changes in sensation: breast feeling heavier, warmer.
“Many of my patients learned about cancer through changes in their skin, not lumps. Others noticed that their nipples looked different. Some experienced constant pain,” notes Dr. Troso.
The expert emphasizes that self-examination is still important. However, pay attention to any changes in the breast, even if no lumps are felt.
