National Desk: The impact of Digital India initiative is clearly visible in the Indian Railways ticketing system. Previously, people had to stand in long queues at stations to buy tickets, but now the situation has completely changed. Today, most people comfortably book their tickets from their homes using their mobile phones, laptops, or apps. Only 11% of people still purchase tickets from counters.
According to the latest IRCTC figures, only 11 out of 100 people purchase tickets from railway counters, while the remaining 89 opt for digital platforms. This shift has occurred rapidly over the past few years.
The Indian Railways has made ticketing system extremely simple and fast over the past decade. Now, tickets can be booked in seconds through mobile phones. This digital transformation has saved passengers time and reduced crowds at stations.
Showing statistics: annual increase in online ticketing. From 2014 to 2025, the percentage of online ticket bookings has consistently increased: 2014–15: 54%, 2015–16: 57%, 2016–17: 60%, 2018–19: 70%, 2020–21: 80%, 2023–24: 83%, 2024–25: 86%, 2025–26: 89%. This means that 9 out of 10 passengers now buy tickets online.
Online tickets not available all the time? IRCTC closes ticket bookings from 11:30 pm to 12:30 am for server maintenance. Tickets can be booked 24 hours otherwise.
Railways have implemented several improvements in technology to ensure a robust and reliable e-ticketing system: fast and stable website, user-friendly mobile app, strong server capacity, and multiple digital payment options.
This digital revolution has made it possible for rural, urban, and city dwellers to purchase tickets without any hassle. It’s a strong example of Digital India’s success and modernization of the Indian Railways.
