Egypt Achieves Historic Milestone in Eliminating Trachoma as a Public Health Issue

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that Egypt has eliminated trachoma as a public health problem, a significant achievement for the country and the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (WHO EMR). Egypt now joins six other countries in WHO EMR in reaching this milestone. With Egypt’s success, the global count of countries that have eradicated trachoma as a public health issue rises to 27. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, commended Egypt for this milestone, highlighting the role of sustained national leadership, robust surveillance, and community involvement in combating the disease that has plagued humanity for centuries.
