Teams from Egypt and the International Red Cross have launched a mission to locate the bodies of Israeli hostages in Gaza as part of a ceasefire agreement brokered by the US. Cooperation from Hamas has been noted, although challenges remain due to the extensive destruction in the area.
President Donald Trump, the architect of the ceasefire deal signed in Sharm el-Sheikh, emphasized the importance of a prompt return of the bodies. He conveyed his message to Hamas, urging them to act swiftly. Through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated his intention to closely monitor the situation in the next 48 hours.
As per the terms of the ceasefire pact that became effective on October 10, Hamas is obligated to hand over the remains of all Israeli hostages. In return, Israel will repatriate 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli body returned. To date, Hamas has surrendered 15 out of 28 deceased Israeli hostages, while Israel has given back 195 Palestinian bodies, many of which remain unidentified. Egypt, alongside Qatar and Turkey, plays a crucial role in endorsing the Gaza peace proposal orchestrated by Trump.
Hamas announced that the search operation has been extended to new areas within Gaza, with collaborative efforts ongoing with Egyptian authorities. The group cited the challenging task of locating bodies amidst the widespread devastation left behind.
Gaza’s Health Ministry reported a staggering death toll of over 68,500 Palestinians within the past two years since October 7, 2023. The humanitarian situation in the region remains dire, calling for immediate action and international support to address the crisis.
