Egypt Hopes New Museum by the Pyramids Will Boost Tourism

Egyptian officials are banking on the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) to breathe new life into the country’s tourism sector. The GEM, overlooking the Giza Pyramids, is set to house tens of thousands of artifacts, including the complete collection of Tutankhamun’s treasures. The hope is that the museum can attract an additional 7 million visitors annually, contributing to a total of around 30 million visitors by 2030. The new museum will offer immersive exhibits and virtual reality experiences, a significant upgrade from traditional displays at the older Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Egypt relies on tourism revenue to support its economy, with last year seeing 15.7 million tourists bringing in a record $15 billion. However, challenges such as poor infrastructure and security concerns have hindered the sector’s growth potential. With the GEM’s opening, Egypt aims to capture a larger share of cultural tourists, who tend to stay longer and spend more than leisure travelers. The goal is to make cultural tourism a significant driver of economic growth for the country.

To fully capitalize on the GEM’s opening, Egypt is investing in improving tourist infrastructure, including roads leading to the new museum and a new airport built nearby. The relocation of the entrance to the Giza Pyramids aims to reduce crowding and enhance the visitor experience. Additionally, efforts are being made to integrate the museum visit with other tourist destinations, like the Red Sea resorts, to offer visitors a comprehensive Egyptian experience.

The tourism sector in Egypt has faced various challenges over the years, from political unrest to global pandemics and regional conflicts. By focusing on cultural tourism and enhancing visitor experiences, the country hopes to establish itself as a premier travel destination. The GEM’s inauguration marks a significant milestone in Egypt’s efforts to revive its tourism industry and attract a diverse range of visitors from around the world.
