British-Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel Fattah, known for his pro-democracy efforts, faced a setback as he was denied permission to fly to the UK by Egyptian passport control. Having been Egypt’s most recognized political prisoner, Abdel Fattah was released from jail just seven weeks ago after being granted a pardon by President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. His attempt to travel to London with his sister Sanaa was abruptly halted at Cairo International Airport, with officials informing him that he was not allowed to proceed. The move left his sister to travel alone, sparking confusion and concern within the family.
