Former Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Khaled El-Enany, is poised to take on the role of Director-General of UNESCO, despite facing criticism for his handling of cultural heritage sites in Egypt. His election came after beating Edouard Firmin Matoko of Congo-Brazzaville with 55 votes from UNESCO’s Executive Board. The formal confirmation vote by all 194 member states will take place during the general conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
