Officials in flood-ravaged parts of Indonesia are facing critical shortages of essential supplies, with hospitals, schools, and offices lying in ruins due to the heavy rain that has caused the death toll to reach 950 on Dec 8. A series of tropical storms and monsoon rains have battered South-east and South Asia, resulting in landslides and flash floods across regions from Indonesia’s Sumatra island to Sri Lanka. Governor Muzakir Manaf of Aceh province in Indonesia expressed concerns about the lack of medical personnel, doctors, and basic necessities required for relief efforts. The national disaster mitigation agency reported 950 fatalities and 274 missing individuals in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, with at least 5,000 people injured and severe infrastructure damage.
