Ethiopia has recently celebrated the inauguration of Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), on the Blue Nile. The $5 billion project has been a source of pride for Ethiopia but has caused tensions with downstream neighbors Sudan and Egypt. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has praised the dam as a monumental achievement for the country. However, Egypt and Sudan have raised concerns about water security and potential disruptions to their water supply.
