BELEM, Brazil – During this year’s COP30 gathering, it was announced that Ethiopia is to be confirmed as the host of the COP32 climate summit in 2027. The decision came after Ethiopia’s bid was supported unanimously by the Bureau of African Countries, beating out Nigeria in the process. The announcement was made by COP30 President André Corrêa do Lago, who mentioned that the hosting decision for next year’s COP31 is still being debated between Australia and Turkey. Australia’s bid for COP31, in collaboration with the Pacific Islands, was especially significant due to the vulnerability of these islands to climate change. The participating countries agreed in principle to hold the 2027 conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital.
