Ethiopia to Host COP32 with COP31 Contest Unresolved

Ethiopia confirmed it will host the United Nations’ COP32 climate summit in 2027, defeating Nigeria’s bid. The host country plays a crucial role in setting goals and resolving conflicts during negotiations. At COP30 in Brazil, Ethiopian ambassador Leulseged Tadese Abebe expressed gratitude for the trust placed in Addis Ababa to host COP32. The decision by all participating countries in the region must be unanimous. While the official adoption is pending, it is seen as a formality. The competition for hosting COP31 is ongoing between Turkey and Australia. Australia, aiming to highlight climate issues with Pacific Island nations, faces a deadlock in the decision-making process. German State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth warned that if unresolved, COP31 might take place in Bonn, where the UN climate agency is located.
