Ethiopian Migrant Shocked by ‘One in, One out’ Treaty Between UK and France

The ‘one in, one out’ treaty aiming to deter illegal immigration has caused shock among migrants like Biruk Guye Wodessa, who expressed their desire to return to the UK despite being sent back to France. With only 57 people allowed to enter Britain legally from France under the treaty, the experience of those repatriated to France has raised concerns. Wodessa, an Ethiopian migrant, along with other individuals, shared their dismay at being treated like criminals upon landing in the UK, with some ending up in detention while others in hotels.

Once back in France, migrants are initially provided with support from Groupe SOS Solidarités, offering legal advice, social workers, nurses, and accommodation. However, after a few days, they are transferred to a shelter in Paris. Despite receiving an eight-day pass upon arrival, most fear persecution in their home countries and seek to return to the UK. Although facing challenges in claiming asylum in France, many migrants are determined to make the perilous journey back to Britain.

One of the migrants, Wodessa, who had experienced detainment in the UK, expressed his desire for justice, interrupted medical treatments, and plans to seek asylum in the UK. His harrowing journey has not dampened his determination to build a life in Britain. However, the prospect of crossing the Channel legally remains uncertain. While some hope for legal routes, officials warn of the risks associated with illegal crossings.

The ‘one in, one out’ deal, while deterring some migrants like the Eritrean woman, remains a complex issue for those seeking safety and stability in Europe. Despite challenges in previous asylum attempts, migrants like the Eritrean woman and the Afghan man continue to hold onto a glimmer of hope for a better future. The stories of these individuals shed light on the harsh realities faced by many migrants seeking refuge and highlight the complexities of immigration policies in Europe.
