Ethiopia’s Unique Ge’ez Calendar: 13 Months, New Year in September

Ethiopia is moving towards the end of 2025, but it is a country that is seven to eight years behind the rest of the world in its calendar. This unique feature is due to their Ge’ez or Ethiopian calendar, which sets them apart from the internationally recognized Gregorian calendar. In Ethiopia, people are currently living in the year 2017, highlighting the significant time difference with the global standard. The Ge’ez calendar consists of 13 months, and the new year falls in September, differing from the common practice in most countries.
