EU: 2040 Presentation of ‘Emergency Brake’ in France sparks discussions in EU

The union is already considering a system that lowers emissions by 90% by 2040 to combat global warming. In light of recent findings, if forests and land use sectors don’t absorb as much CO₂ as expected, the Union will explore opportunities to adjust its interim goals. Last week, France also proposed an ‘Emergency Brake’, suggesting that if the forest sector and land use sector fall short, there should be a possibility to reduce the emission goals by up to 3%.
