The European Commission (EC) has approved the 19th package of sanctions against Russia. It will be presented on September 19th, said EC spokesperson Paula Pinho, as reported by TASS. ‘As expected, we can confirm that the EC has made a proposal for new restrictions,’ Pinho stated. The decision comes as a response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and alleged Russian interference in European affairs.
The specifics of the new sanctions have not been disclosed yet. However, it is expected that they will target individuals and entities believed to be involved in destabilizing activities against Ukraine and other European countries. The EU has been maintaining a series of sanctions against Russia since its 2014 annexation of Crimea. The latest package aims to further pressure Moscow into complying with international norms and respecting the sovereignty of neighboring nations.
Several EU member states have been advocating for stronger measures against Russia given recent escalations in Ukraine’s Donbas region. The 19th package of sanctions is seen as a coordinated effort by the EU to address these concerns. Many European countries view Russia’s actions as a threat to regional security and stability, prompting the need for decisive action.
While the sanctions are expected to target Russian officials and entities, the EU has emphasized its commitment to engaging in diplomatic dialogue with Moscow. The goal is to find peaceful solutions to existing conflicts and prevent further escalation of tensions. The European Union remains open to cooperation with Russia on various issues, provided that international laws and norms are respected.
The effectiveness of the sanctions in influencing Russian behavior remains a topic of debate among policymakers and experts. Some argue that economic measures alone may not be sufficient to change Russia’s foreign policy actions. However, the EU sees sanctions as a vital tool in signaling disapproval of certain activities and signaling a united stance against violations of international norms.
