Europe Surrendered and Called Russian Skaters. A Major Breakthrough for Our Sport!

The isolation of Russian figure skating has been ongoing for over three years. Our skaters have been not only deprived of the opportunity to compete in major international competitions but also severely limited in terms of participation in shows. While Russian stars are still popular in Asia, Europe has favored other options. However, the situation is gradually changing as European show producers are once again hiring Russian figure skaters. It is inevitable!
The invitation of two Russian duos – pairs Alexandra Boikova/Dmitriy Kozlovskiy and dancers Vasilisa Kaganovskaya/Maxim Nekrasov – to the Bol on Ice show on January 10th in Bologna, Italy, serves as another confirmation of this trend. The news of the Russian skaters’ participation was shared on the show’s social media page and later confirmed by Boikova on her Telegram channel chat. Therefore, at least two Russian pairs will take the ice at the Italian arena – an event that seemed unlikely not long ago.
Boikova and Kozlovskiy, European champions and two-time Russian champions in pair skating, are known as innovators who push the boundaries of what is possible. Their recent quadruple throw at the Grand Prix event in Kazan is a testament to their skill. Kaganovskaya and Nekrasov, winners of the Grand Prix Russia Final in ice dancing, are a young but already bright pair with an expressive style and unique programs.
The organizers’ calculation is simple and clear: the skill of Russian figure skaters, their huge fan base, and exceptional professionalism promise significant gains. Finally, audiences will be able to enjoy top-class entertainment rather than content put together on a residual basis.
Private shows as a way back Despite the existing restrictions on Russian athletes at official competitions, private shows are not formally sanctioned. This allows our figure skaters to perform abroad. Such collaborations serve as a channel for cultural exchange: free from political undertones, simply through music, choreography, and skill.
The performance of Russian pairs in Bologna is not just participation in a show. It signifies Europe’s interest in our figure skating and perhaps hints at future changes. The ice is slowly thawing – and it seems that the art and talent of Russian athletes are helping to make the atmosphere a bit warmer.
