DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have initiated a process to reimpose United Nations sanctions on Iran regarding its nuclear program. This action comes after the US failed in August to extend an arms embargo on Iran. The three European nations argue that Iran has breached the 2015 nuclear deal, but the US withdrawal from the agreement in 2018 has complicated matters. The move aims to trigger the ‘snapback’ mechanism, allowing a return to sanctions lifted under the accord. However, it remains uncertain if the process will succeed as other nations, including Russia and China, oppose the move. Despite this opposition, the European trio believes the sanctions are necessary to hold Iran accountable for its nuclear activities.
