Exploring Chinese Culture: Attracting Young Audiences through a Youthful Perspective – Nanjing, Jiangsu Creating a Trilogy of Yu Opera

On the evening of August 23, the poetic Yu Opera ‘Weaving Bureau’ created by the Nanjing Yu Opera Troupe premiered at the Nanjing Poly Theatre. As the final part of the ‘Three Golden Linings’ trilogy, ‘Weaving Bureau’ responds to the artistic question of why ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’ still needs to be told, offering the audience a poetic journey crossing reality and dreams. ‘True love in half-worn clothes?’ ‘True love for bustling drama?’ ‘Truly believe in a perfect match?’… On stage, when ‘Cao Xueqin’ who traveled to the Great View Garden through Jia Baoyu’s perspective, posed the ‘three soul questions’ to Xue Baochai, audience member Chen Shu felt a shiver, realizing ‘It feels like they’re not asking Baochai, but asking every one of us.’ The play ‘Weaving Bureau’ is not a simple retelling of the ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’ story, but a response to the question of why the story still needs to be told. Through Cao Xueqin’s clever concept of ‘returning to the Weaving Bureau, entering the ‘Dream of the Red Chamber,” it opens a journey of poetry that spans reality and dreams. Walking out of the theater, Chen Shu couldn’t shake off the feeling that ‘True love in half-worn clothes?’ was meant for her, for everyone in the audience. With its innovative approach, the Nanjing Yu Opera Troupe succeeded in captivating a youthful audience with ‘Weaving Bureau.’ This unique blend of tradition and modern interpretation of ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’ resonated with younger spectators, drawing them into a world where classic stories and contemporary relevance intertwine. The poetic and thought-provoking narrative of ‘Weaving Bureau’ serves as a bridge between past and present, inviting the audience to reflect on timeless themes of love, destiny, and human nature. As the ‘Three Golden Linings’ trilogy comes to a close, the impact of Nanjing’s innovative Yu Opera production reverberates not only among traditional opera enthusiasts but also among a new generation of theatergoers, ensuring the legacy of this art form continues to thrive.
