Thresholds, a group exhibition currently on display at 2 venues in Hong Kong, features 9 artists delving into Indonesian traditions to map out their spiritual paths. Bali-based curator Galuh Sukardi had a vision of exploring the rich rituals and traditions of her homeland Indonesia. Having previously worked with major art institutions like Sotheby’s and David Zwirner, Sukardi saw an opportunity to highlight artists from Indonesia as the country’s art scene gains attention. She was eager to reconnect with her own background, which she felt had faded during her time living abroad.
Deeply intrigued by Indonesia’s diverse culture, influenced by various colonial powers, Sukardi felt compelled to delve into the artistic expressions and Islamic influences of her country. The abundance of sculptures, shrines, and mythical creatures in Bali sparked introspection in Sukardi, leading her to question her own understanding and consumption of cultural elements. A moment of clarity struck Sukardi while gazing out of her villa window, prompting her to embark on a mission to explore and showcase Indonesia’s artistic traditions in a new light.
The artists participating in Thresholds artfully navigate themes of life, death, and transformation through their unique interpretations of Indonesian culture. By shining a spotlight on these artists, Sukardi hopes to illuminate the depth and complexity of Indonesian art and inspire dialogue about the intersection of culture and spirituality in contemporary art. The exhibition serves as a platform for artists to deepen their connection to their heritage while engaging with a global audience in the vibrant art scene of Hong Kong.
Through Thresholds, viewers are invited to immerse themselves in the intricate tapestry of Indonesian traditions, as seen through the lens of nine talented artists. Each artwork offers a glimpse into the artists’ personal journeys of self-discovery and cultural exploration, inviting reflection on the universal themes of identity, heritage, and transformation. Sukardi’s curatorial vision aims to foster a deeper appreciation for Indonesian art and heritage while creating a space for cross-cultural dialogue and understanding within the dynamic art landscape of Hong Kong.
