Extension of the commercial truce with China is a ‘decision by Trump’, says US Secretary

US and Chinese authorities established a ‘very positive framework’ ahead of crucial trade negotiations between their leaders this week, said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday. Wearing traditional attire, protests, tariff hikes, and lobbyists: behind the scenes of the meeting of 20 leaders in Malaysia, including Trump and Xi Jinping. Bessent described it as constructive, comprehensive, deep, and giving us the ability to move forward and set the stage for the leaders’ meeting in a very positive framework after two days of negotiations concluded in Malaysia. However, Bessent emphasized that any extension of a trade truce agreed upon when US President Donald Trump meets with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping in South Korea would be ‘President Trump’s decision’. The most recent news confirms a meeting between Trump and Lula, discussing ‘overcoming’ issues and hinting at the US intention to distance Brazil from China.
