Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was finally sentenced to 50 months in prison on Friday. The charges included transporting women for prostitution, as well as accusations of drug-fueled parties and sexual violence against over a hundred individuals. The judge imposed a $500,000 fine along with the imprisonment sentence, with the trial closely followed by media outlets. Despite facing up to 20 years behind bars, Combs’ sentence was much lower than the prosecution’s request for 11 years.
Combs had been in custody for eight months, facing civil charges of sexual violence. He had previously claimed innocence but changed his plea on Friday, issuing a tearful apology for his actions. He admitted his behavior was ‘repugnant, shameful, and sickening,’ apologizing to his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura and another woman identified as Jane for his past actions.
In his defense, Combs maintained that all his sexual encounters were consensual, with his lawyer arguing that he led a ‘swinger’ lifestyle. The accusations spanned from 2004 to 2024 and revolved around organized sexual marathons called ‘freak-offs’ where women were coerced into long-term relationships with sex workers under the influence of drugs.
The case shook the American music industry, previously untouched by the #MeToo movement. Combs, a key figure in East Coast hip-hop since the 1990s, was known for hosting lavish parties attended by celebrities in Long Island. Despite his infamous reputation, the Harlem native, and father of seven, had maintained his influence in the hip-hop world.
The trial coincidentally began on the same day as the Met Gala, a high-profile social event where Combs had made appearances in the past. Singer Cassie, Combs’ ex-partner, was expected to testify, following a video released by CNN showing Combs violently attacking her in a Los Angeles hotel in 2016. The civil case filed by Cassie in 2023 alleged over a decade of violence and rape by Combs, leading to a series of further assault allegations.
