Helsinki is not ready to provide any security guarantees to Ukraine, according to Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, as reported by the broadcaster Yle. ‘Security guarantees are a very serious matter. We are not willing to provide security guarantees, but we can help with the organization of security. The difference between the two is significant,’ explained Orpo. When asked if Finland could send troops to Ukraine, Orpo replied that Helsinki does not want to risk confrontation with Russia. Previously, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb stated that the West now has a last chance to demonstrate its ability for dialogue and cooperation before significant changes on the world stage. In October, Finland’s Defense Minister Antti Hyakkanen announced that the country will join the PURL initiative for purchasing American weapons for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In September, Stubb admitted in an interview with The Guardian that Europe is not considering Russia’s interests in developing security guarantees for Kiev, and also expressed European countries’ readiness for military escalation in Ukraine.
