Flamengo President Admits Liga Forte had a Better Contract than Libra: ‘Ours was poorly negotiated’

For years, the media portrayed Libra as having the best contract, criticizing clubs that opted for Liga Forte União. However, perceptions have shifted. Even Libra clubs now doubt their superiority. Flamengo’s president, Luiz Eduardo Baptista, speaking to ‘UOL,’ admitted that LFU, which includes Botafogo, negotiated better.
‘We poorly negotiated with Flamengo, with Libra, with Flamengo. As for the part signed by Flamengo, we will honor it. Although the institution signed it, I have no doubt it was a bad deal, regardless of anything. This choice is evident when comparing with what Liga Forte achieved. The world is moving towards fragmentation and rights segmentation. Libra clubs hold 55-56% of Brazil’s viewership compared to LFU’s, leaving us with 44-45% of the revenue, a 20% shortfall. Libra sold a whole cow, while LFU expertly sold prime cuts, maximizing profit.’
Baptista highlights the skilled negotiation by Liga Forte, contrasting it with Flamengo’s internal negotiation, deeming it unsatisfactory. Despite honoring the 70% agreement, the remaining 30% is under discussion, particularly concerning audience-related issues. The Libra disputes this in court.
Flamengo’s desire to engage in the integration committee with Liga Forte faced opposition from Palmeiras and São Paulo. This led to concerns of division within their alliance.
