Flooding has claimed the lives of hundreds in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, with thousands displaced due to the destruction caused by the natural disaster. In Sumatra, Indonesia, residents facing dire circumstances have been forced to steal food and water in order to stay alive. Meanwhile, in Sri Lanka, the death toll from floods and mudslides has tragically climbed to 193.
The floods in Indonesia, which began nearly a week ago, have already resulted in 303 fatalities and left numerous others without shelter. The daunting task of rescue and recovery efforts has been compounded by landslides, destroyed roads, and widespread communication failures across the island. The adverse weather conditions and the lack of necessary equipment have further slowed down the rescue operations in the affected regions.
The distribution of aid has been a challenge, especially in the severely impacted city of Sibolga and the Central Tapanuli District in North Sumatra. Videos circulating on social media have captured scenes of desperation, as individuals navigate through various obstacles to access essential supplies like food, medications, and fuel. Some have even braved waist-deep floodwaters to reach partially damaged stores for provisions.
The North Sumatra Police have reported incidents of looting, with residents taking matters into their own hands in the absence of immediate aid. According to police spokesperson Ferry Walintukan, these acts of desperation occurred before significant logistical support could reach the affected areas. The uncertainty regarding the arrival of aid left residents anxious about potential shortages and drove them to extreme measures to ensure their survival.
