Flooding in Southeast Asia Nearly 1,000 Dead

Indonesia is the most affected country, with at least 442 fatalities and over 400 people still missing, according to the latest figures from the disaster management agency. The government has deployed helicopters and planes to supply isolated citizens with food and survival supplies. Access to two locations on the island of Sumatra is still impossible, and the army mobilized two ships to deliver aid to that area.

More than 213,000 people had to evacuate their homes to escape the flooding. Mud covers buildings, streets, and vehicles, and in some areas, cleanup efforts have not even begun. ‘Most residents chose to stay; they didn’t want to leave their homes,’ reported Idris, a 55-year-old Indonesian. Although the rains are easing, there is still fear of landslides.

The situation in southern Thailand is similar, with at least 162 deaths and a large number of houses washed away by the water. The government has promised around 53,000 euros per lost home but has faced criticism for the delay in issuing alerts. Emergency measures have been declared, and efforts are underway to search for the missing and clear the debris.

In Sri Lanka, the death toll has reached 212, with a similar number of individuals still unaccounted for and 833,000 displaced. The city of Colombo is among the most affected areas, with many residents taking shelter on rooftops to avoid being swept away. ‘My wife, children, and I were like that for two days. We had very little food. In the end, we only had cookies,’ shared Sumenthra. A rescue team on a lifeboat managed to relocate the family to safety. Yesterday, one-third of the population still lacked electricity and running water, prompting the country to seek international assistance.
