Indonesian authorities revealed on Tuesday that 15 individuals, primarily children, lost their lives after being swept away while attempting to cross a river in Papua’s easternmost region. The tragic incident occurred in the remote village of Dal in the Nduga area on a Saturday, following heavy rainfall that caused the river to overflow, tragically ushering away 15 victims aged between eight and 17, as detailed by local police chief Alfredo Agustinus Rumbiak. Regrettably, specific search efforts have only managed to recover one body, with ongoing endeavors to locate the remaining affected individuals.
Moreover, the same day, another unfortunate incident unfolded in a nearby village, where eight children were carried away by floodwaters while crossing a separate river with their parents, per Rumbiak. The challenging terrain, marked by mountainous landscapes, has further complicated search operations. The disaster mitigation agency of Indonesia has cautioned residents to brace for additional flooding in several Papua regions, due to anticipated heavy rainfall.
Undoubtedly, search operations face exacerbated difficulties due to the ‘red zone’ status of the Nduga region, characterized by ongoing conflict. Papua’s separatist movements have persistently sought independence across the resource-endowed territory ever since it was integrated into Indonesia post-Dutch colonization, a process endorsed by the United Nations in 1969. Disturbingly, the initial site of the disaster was also the location where a separatist group perpetrated a deadly attack on construction workers in 2018.
Tragically, the region witnessed further turmoil in 2023 when a New Zealand pilot was abducted in Nduga, only to be released after a grueling 19-month captivity. The local landscape is marked by the remnants of past conflicts, underscoring the perennial challenges faced by authorities in providing aid and security to affected populations.
