Floods in Asia leave over a thousand dead due to heavy rains in November 2025

Intense rains and cyclones hit several Asian countries in late November 2025, causing floods and landslides that resulted in over a thousand deaths. Authorities from Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia confirmed the updated numbers on the morning of December 1, with rescue teams still operating in isolated areas. The weather phenomenon, driven by monsoons and rare storms, displaced millions and damaged infrastructure in coastal and mountainous regions. The epicenter of the rains was in the Malacca Strait, where a rare tropical storm formed, releasing record rainfall. In Hat Yai, Thailand, 335 mm of rain was recorded in a single day, the highest volume in 300 years. Governments mobilized military forces for evacuations and supply distribution, while meteorologists warned of ongoing risks due to remnants of nearby typhoons.
