Ford Focus Era Ends: Brand’s Future Strategy Shifts

The era of the Ford Focus officially came to an end. The model, which for almost three decades was a symbol of the European market, has been discontinued. Over 27 years, the company produced around twelve million units, and it’s hard to imagine another hatchback that has been so firmly established in the mass segment, writes 32CARS.RU. However, for Ford, the time for change came back in 2022 when the brand announced a shift to an electric vehicle strategy and hinted at the imminent discontinuation of the model.

Today, the Focus is effectively being replaced by the new electric Explorer and Capri, built on the German MEB platform. The Saarlouis plant, where Focus models were assembled for many years, has been halted, and its future remains uncertain: no buyer has been found for the site, and Ford does not plan to launch new projects there. This is a significant blow to the region, as the facility was one of the town’s key employers.

The decline in sales of traditional models has also affected the brand’s position. Over nine years, Ford has fallen in the European rankings from almost the top spot to twelfth. To regain customer trust, a new head of the European division has been appointed – Jim Baumick. He has previously worked on the Focus and Kuga models and is now tasked with shaping a new lineup that will once again meet the demands of Europeans.

The vacant space left by the Focus is set to be filled by a crossover that will be unveiled in 2027. Preliminary information suggests it will come in hybrid and fully electric versions, but it will not be a direct replacement for the Kuga. In my opinion, Ford is trying to find a new formula for success – and the end of the Focus era is just the first step on this path.
