Former Pakistani Diplomat Mocks Shehbaz Sharif’s Flattery of Trump; Tharoor Reacts

Former Pakistani Ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani, criticized Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his excessive praise of US President Donald Trump. Sharif had lauded Trump for his role in brokering a peace deal between Cambodia and Thailand. Haqqani mocked Sharif’s comments, suggesting that he was trying to win a ‘gold medal’ in flattering Trump. Indian-American journalist Fareed Zakaria’s comments on the matter were also referenced by Haqqani, who highlighted the trend of flattering Trump among political leaders. Shashi Tharoor later shared Haqqani’s remarks on social media. Sharif’s admiration for Trump is not new. Previously, he praised Trump at the Gaza Peace Summit, calling him a ‘man of peace’ and endorsing him for the Nobel Peace Prize. Sharif credited Trump with halting hostilities between India and Pakistan, leading to peace in South Asia. However, many have criticized Sharif for his efforts to impress the US president, claiming that he is making a mockery of Pakistan.
