In Brazil, former president Jair Bolsonaro, aged 70, who served as president from 2019 until 2022, when he was defeated in the national elections, has been arrested. Despite winning the presidency after joining the Liberal Party, Bolsonaro faced defeat in the parliamentary elections. The incumbent, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, from the Workers’ Party, was elected president. However, Bolsonaro refused to accept his defeat. Reiterating doubts about the electronic voting system, he was arrested pending trial. As a result, his supporters protested throughout the country, leading to acts of vandalism against government buildings.
However, the military’s efforts invalidated this claim. Consequently, Bolsonaro was detained and brought to court. The trial took place in the Supreme Court of Brazil, where he was convicted due to evidence of his involvement in a coup plot. He was sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison, marking the first time a former Brazilian president faced punishment on a coup plot conviction. The arrest of Bolsonaro led to public outrage, with widespread protests and demonstrations calling for justice and accountability.
Facing charges of incitement to violence, all individuals involved in the demonstrations were detained. Next week, he is expected to be put behind bars. This situation echoes the previous incident where the police, in Brazil, including the police chief, had summoned Bolsonaro to the headquarters. Consequently, his supporters faced police repression, heightening concerns about their ability to engage in protests peacefully.
