From Death’s Door to 25 Yrs On: HIV Survivor’s Second Chance

A Mumbai clinic recently marked a remarkable milestone – 25 years of survival for an HIV patient who was once near death. Diagnosed with PML and a CD4 count of 12 in 1999, aggressive antiretroviral therapy helped his immune system recover, enabling him to lead a stable life. This case underscores the power of early treatment and the significance of medical vigilance within families. Dr. Ishwar Gilada shared the inspiring story of this patient who defied the odds and celebrated his 60th birthday, decades after initially arriving at the clinic in a critical condition. Referral to the clinic came when the patient’s health deteriorated rapidly with neurological symptoms, leading to a grim diagnosis of Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare and often fatal condition. Aggressive HIV treatment combined with symptom management provided a glimmer of hope for the patient and his family. The multidisciplinary approach involving neurologists and infectious disease specialists was key to his remarkable recovery.
