From November 16, the Northeast Monsoon Intensifies Again

The Northeast monsoon brought only 2 showers last month in Chennai, and it has been dry since then. Even though occasional light showers occurred, the monsoon in the region did not show significant activity until now. At present, the winds are changing from the Southern Arabian Sea region towards the East and North India, turning into the Northeast monsoon by November 11, which is tomorrow (11.11.2025).

This change in wind direction is expected to bring moderate to heavy rain from November 16 onwards, affecting various coastal districts, including the Cauvery Delta, Southern districts, and the Northern coastal regions. The conditions are favorable for rainfall until the 15th of the month, with increased humidity during nighttime and cloud cover during the daytime, leading to conducive conditions for rain in some areas.

Following this, humidity and cloud formation will increase from November 13 to 15, with humidity peaking during nighttime and overcast skies during the day, creating conditions suitable for rain in a few locations, as reported by meteorologists.

This trend will progress to form low-pressure areas which will develop into rainfall zones over the Bay of Bengal, extending towards the Southeast in the Indian Ocean, intensifying the Northeast monsoon from November 16, as indicated by independent meteorologist Delta Vedhamen Hemachandar.

From November 16 to 17, the coastal areas, including the Cauvery Delta, Southern districts, and the coastal districts from Chennai to Kanyakumari, may witness rainfall from the night of the 17th to the 19th, according to Hemachandar. This pattern will shift progressively towards the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu up to the end of the month.

On November 21, the wind change will transform into a cyclonic circulation, becoming more pronounced by the 25th, possibly leading to cyclonic conditions in some regions. In addition, Tamil Nadu can expect favorable conditions for rainfall until the end of the month, according to meteorologists, hinting at a conducive environment for good rains throughout the first half of December.
