The indictment is seen as another step in President Donald Trump’s campaign to retaliate against those who investigated or criticized him during his tenure. In a video posted on Instagram, Comey maintained his innocence and expressed faith in the US judicial system. According to American press reports, he is expected to surrender to authorities on Friday. ‘My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal judiciary system and I am innocent, so let’s have a trial and keep the faith,’ said Comey. Trump accused the former FBI chief of being ‘corrupt’ and charged him ‘with several illegal and illicit acts.’ ‘He has been so bad for our country for so long, and now he is beginning to be held accountable for his crimes against our nation,’ he wrote on Truth Social. Trump and Comey have had a tumultuous relationship since the beginning of the president’s first term in 2017. Trump fired him from the FBI director’s position only days after Comey publicly confirmed that the president was under investigation due to his campaign’s connections to Russia. Comey then became a prominent critic of the president, stating that he was ‘morally unfit’ for the office.
