Hayli Gubbi Volcano Eruption: Impact on Flights in India

An ash cloud from Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano, which erupted after 12,000 years, now affects northern India. The eruption spread ash plumes towards Yemen, Oman, and the Arabian Sea. IndiaMetSky Weather reports ash travelling at 100-120 km/h at altitudes between 15,000-25,000 feet. The ash consists of volcanic material, sulphur dioxide, and rock particles. Portions of the plume are passing over Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, impacting air traffic.

IndiaMetSky Weather forecasts the ash cloud to reach Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and later the Himalayas. Several airlines like Akasa Air, IndiGo, and KLM cancelled flights due to the volcanic ash threat. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation issued advisories for airlines to avoid ash-affected areas. They must report any suspected ash encounters immediately.

The Hayli Gubbi volcano eruption started at 8:30 am UTC on Sunday, affecting nearby villages in Ethiopia’s Afar region. Ash clouds are now moving towards northern India. The Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre confirmed the eruption and is monitoring the trajectory. Meteorological agencies and airlines continue to track the ash cloud for safe air operations in the region.
