Andrew was buried this Sunday in the Ricardo de Albuquerque Cemetery, in the North Zone of Rio. Dayene initially told her son that his father had died in an accident. And that’s why he had become a little star in the sky. ‘My oldest son was very attached to his father. I told him that his father had been in a car accident and had become a little star. But my son saw part of a news report and found out what happened. At that moment, he started crying and shouting for his father, saying that his heart was hurting,’ Dayene said.
In a statement, the Military Police admitted that one of the officers was responsible for the shot that hit Andrew. The document states that the police were patrolling near the Chapadão Complex when men on three motorcycles passed by shooting at the PMs. Subsequently, according to the statement, a driver did not obey a stop order and broke through the police cordon. One of the officers fired a shot that hit the driver. He was taken to Getúlio Vargas Hospital in Penha, but did not survive the injury and died. The young man’s family disputes the version and says that Andrew was not a criminal. Dayane Nicácio Carvalho, 25, mother of two of the deliverer’s children, said that her husband was returning from a gathering in a neighbor’s car with loud music and closed windows. And since there was a bus in front of him, he did not hear the police command. The last exchange of messages between them was just before midnight. ‘At 11:59 pm, I asked if he was on his way home, and he replied that he was already arriving. Half an hour later, everything happened. Every time he saw a police car, he stopped. He was licensed, the car was up to date. There was no reason to flee,’ Dayene said.
When she heard about the incident, she went to the 39th Police Station (Pavuna), but there was no record of the case. From there, she went to Getúlio Vargas Hospital, where she received confirmation that her husband had been shot. ‘I asked not to lie to me. I asked if he was okay, and the officer said he was in serious condition. When they looked up his name, they saw nothing. The officer turned to me and said, ‘I’m sorry.’ But sorry doesn’t bring the father of my children back,’ she said. According to reports from the wife, friends, and family, Andrew was a motorcycle taxi driver and had worked as a deliveryman. He had recently been repairing cell phones at home in the community. The couple had been together for eight years. Dayene states that they had just bought a house with the money from a bank loan. ‘We had just started paying for our little house. Simple, but ours. And now I don’t know how it’s going to be. At first, we had nothing. A car seat instead of a sofa, an old TV, and a single bed. But he never let us go hungry. He left home in the rain, in the cold, to work. He set up the workbench with tools to repair phones on the table because we didn’t have money to open a shop. It was our income. I can prove that my husband was a hard worker,’ Dayene said.
